Philosophy of work

What is the purpose of work if the work being done lacks a substantive purpose? We would hope that the work being done is for the betterment of the world, but in what way is it being made better? My experience has revealed to me three values for fundamentally improving the world. The work that I aim to do is work that upholds the values of faith, humility, and beauty. During my lifetime, these values have become evident within me as values that motivate me to work beyond what is required. While other values motivate with demands, these are values of meaning. Pursuit of this meaning is what it means to truly live life, and I intend to channel this pursuit into my labor.

FAITH

Faith encourages me for its belief in something far greater than myself. I view my life and all my talents, specifically creativity, communication, and intelligence, as a gift that I owe an infinite debt to. I aim to do justice by these gifts by channeling all of my talents into fulfilling work. In utilizing and optimizing my talents together, I live my faith by giving what I have been given. Fulfilling work provides for physiological, belonging, and self-actualization needs of a person. It looks at people not as units nor customers, but as souls to be cherished. Closely related to faith is humility.

Humility

Humility tells me that I do not know everything, nor do I need to know everything. It is liberating knowing that I am one part of a wider community of people. My ideas of perfection pale in comparison to the widespread effects of our combined efforts. This collaborative effort excites me because we are witnessing the beauty of our collective minds. This leads me to the last value: beauty.

Beauty

Beauty is objective; it can be felt in our minds and hearts. It is sought after and lifts our moods. Beauty can be visual, audible, and even internally felt. Beauty is created by being true to the subconscious mind. It is satisfaction with the status of the world. Fulfilling and productive work is beautiful to the soul in the same way that symmetry and the golden ratio is pleasing to the eye. In imagining the beautiful long-term vision that awaits from the fruits of labor, the mundane tasks become purposeful and the yoke becomes light. This internal yearning is enough to carry projects to completion for goals beautiful enough to being realized.

These values encourage high-quality work due to the innate drive they bring about. Money encourages activity; values encourage proactivity. It is a responsibility to meet the demands of a position, but purpose encourages a higher level of dedication, diligence, and effort that cannot be externally compelled. Additionally, commitments to faith, humility, and beauty precipitate other values, namely truth and compassion. Truthfulness in every task encourages trust between myself and the people around me. This saves time in evaluating a situation honestly and not having to discern the accuracy of assessments. Compassion for others encourages proactivity in attempting to lighten the load for those above me, below me, and next to me. These are universal values that apply to everyone and do not believe in favoritism.

Through my work, the values of faith, humility, and beauty would permeate and enhance any organization. They would redefine the work culture into one that makes the work into a mission, and all tasks in the organization would be seen as valuable towards fulfilling that mission. The effort would become effortless. Marketing would become honest. The rising tide would raise all ships; from stakeholders to employees to customers, the light within would shine beyond.
